Occasionally a concern arises as to how stack racks will perform during a seismic event.  Static loads are easy to test and determine stability, while dynamic loads are much more difficult to analyze and account for.  Anecdotal evidence shows that stackable pallets and stack rack made by Tier-Rack Corporation perform well under seismic conditions and impact due to their ability to absorb the shock waves, by swaying, and moving across the floor.

Please see the videos below for examples of how standard "rack"; in this case bolt to the floor pallet racking performs in these situations.  The video below shows a 6.1-magnitude tremor hitting Poas Volcano National Park in Costa Rica.

These videos show how a simple impact can bring down fixed racking

                                                                   Base Isolation

Seismic letterIf you have watched the Discovery Channel much lately you will see numerous programs dedicated to explaining how new technology is helping design earthquake resistant buildings.  It is generally referred to as base isolation.
From Scientific American, September 2004...The leading techniques “try to absorb a lot of the ground motion energy so the building doesn’t have to,” says James Malley, senior principal at Degenkolb Engineers in San Francisco. That often means inserting heavy-duty fixtures between the building and its foundation, such as base isolators that act as rubber mats, viscous fluid dampers that operate like shock absorbers, or slide bearings that allow the building to sway instead of snap. (link to full article...http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=shock-absorbed

What this illustrates is similar to how our stacking pallets (sometimes called rack) perform.  They will sway and rock and absorb the shock.  We even have evidence of them scooting across the floor moving with the shock waves, but not failing.  As opposed to the rigid structure of bolted to the floor pallet racking, our rack's relatively "loose" fit acts as the dampers allowing for the necessary shock absorption to withstand inpact more efficiently.

Each municipality interprets and applies the IBC (International Building Code) differently.  Some inspectors don't use it at all and apply different codes to determine suitability of rack or bin design.  Tier-Rack has no way of knowing this from township to township so it is up to you to lay the groundwork.  Much of the confusion comes from the misapplication of standard "rack" codes to our portable material handling pallets.  "Racking" by definition is a bolted to the ground structure.  To apply those "racking" codes to our product is as erroneous as trying to apply it to a forklift.

stackable pallets suspended rollDon't let our name fool you.  The name Tier-Rack was coined back in 1955 and is only a trade name.  Our product is truly a steel pallet, portable and stackable.  Steel portable stackable pallets are not structures. The steel portable stackable pallets are pieces of equipment intended to protect the product that is being moved around a warehouse. They are no different than wooden pallets or even crates. Materials in wooden crates or on wooden pallets are stored and stacked commonly on the ground (see picture to left).

The steel stackable pallets are no different. They are steel pallets which hold a product (just like wood pallets) with steel tube members that protect the product by supporting any additional steel pallets that one might stack on top of the lower steel portable stackable pallets. The tube post members are no different than the wooden panels of crates in that respect. They are not structures; there is no positive connection between each piece of the units; they are meant for temporary storage only and not intended to be permanent fixtures (just like wooden pallets of material stored on the ground).

Truck tire racks have helped many tire companies with storing very big tires that are awkward and difficult to handle.

In recent times, Tier-Rack has started designing and manufacturing truck tire racks to store truck tires, bus tires, Off-The-Road tires, (OTR tires) Sport Utility Vehicle tires (SUV tires) and All-Terrain-Vehicle tires (ATV tires) for tire companies. Truck tire racks are mobile racks that can be moved very easily with the average forklift. These storage racks are also designed to stack up to 4 high when fully loaded which means you need a minimum of 22 feet of warehouse ceiling height to utilize their full capability.

Truck Tire Racks

The truck tire rack is larger and constructed with heavier tubing compared to passenger tire rack. The main differences between these two racks are the number of tires that can be stored. Passenger tire racks have a tire capacity of 24 to 32 tires while truck tire racks hold approximately 12 tires per rack. For this reason tire companies stress that stack rack manufactures design racks that take up the least amount of room in their warehouse and still store as many tires as possible.

We often have to answer the question: How should we store our tires in order to ensure that they have the longest shelf life and greatest saleability?  Well, we listened, and have a few tips for you.  As a company that has been making stacking racks for storage of...well...everything since 1955, we have a few ideas on how to safely keep a warehouse filled with tires.

Tip 1 - Weight is an enemy.  Don't believe for a second that because they are heavy, tires can have things stacked on top of them.  Tires are, by their nature, extremely malleable.  They can compress and warp under pressure, causing them to lose their shape and compromising the integrity of the rubber in extreme cases.  This can cause tires to age prematurely and come apart on the wheel, an obviously undesirable outcome.

Tip 2 - Heat is another enemy.  Store tires in a cool, dry environment that doesn't vary from this.  Storing tires in a hot, moist room exposes the tires to undue wear and can reduce their effectiveness.  The warmth makes the rubber MORE malleable, causing even more damage than would normally be seen.  Warehouses that operate warmer and moister than others are subject to greater tire decay than those in more temperate environments.

Keep to these simple tips and you can add months or years of storage time to your tires, ensuring higher profits and more bountiful sales.

Tier-Rack has been the leader in storage rack technology since 1955, when they invented the stack rack.  This technology has given companies the world over the tools to transform and configure their warehouses into efficient, profitable parts of their business.  Let Tier-Rack quote you on your warehouse needs today.  Call (800) 325-7869 and visit www.tier-rack.com to find out the Tier-Rack difference.

Here's a list of rules that your tire warehouse should always make sure to follow to ensure proper safety when using Tier-Rack's tire racks.

Always maintain a clean warehouse

This means floors, aisles, shelves, whatever.  Take the time to ensure that your warehouse walkways and storage areas are free from clutter that can cause accidents, and don't have potential spill areas for slip and falls

Ensure that cables are covered.  Don't assume that people will always see cables stretched across the floor or walkways

Pace yourselves - running in a warehouse or working yourselves to the point of exhaustion are both false hustle mistakes.  There's no reason to run or work tired.  They can wait on their tire for the 2 minutes it takes to walk, and your manager needs to schedule you for breaks.

Make sure that the warehouse is always well ventilated, keeping airflow during the summer and heat in the winter can mean the difference between a safe worker and a costly sickness or injury.

These are just a few examples of how a little pre-planning can help solve the major problems of warehouse work.  Ensuring warehouse safety means that everyone can work effectively and efficiently.  This will make your business more profitable and a better place to work.

Since 1955, Tier-Rack Corp has used their Tier-Rack storage system to store tires, boxes, fabric, pipe,  elecronics, bicycles, furniture, food, beverages, and almost any product that can be kept in a warehouse.  Any company that uses pallets can use this product, which stacks frames on top of your existing wood pallets to create  vertical space. These will allow a company to stack 3 to 5 loads of crushable of fragile products, as well as  awkward, non-stackable product.

When the frames aren't being utilized, they take up a small amount of space, folding down to conserve your  precious warehouse space.
